I went down to the forge to speak to the owner and talk about my ideas, this also helped me to talk to him about the industrial revolution and get a first hand account of his views. This was a great learning curve for me, it helped me to really get to know the passion behind this industry which I never really thought about when I work for him. This enabled me to learn about the lighting and best places to set up the camera; this also helped my subject matter to get used to the camera being in this intimate place for them. It was very important that the subject was relaxed and comfortable with being filmed so that I got more impacting and natural video footage, audio and still images. I found the technique of shooting lots, many times a really good way to get bulk quality videos which in the editing process I can edit down. In future when doing video, I will use this technique of taking lots and lots of film which I can later edit down to suit.
Below are some of the initial video clips that I took, most of them practicing with lighting, angles, framing and just the use of video in general.
I was very happy with the final outcomes however I knew that these weren't the clips that I would be using for my final piece.
Having never used a DSLR for video, it was a big learning curve for me but I think I have made some great initial video footage.
